Critical Mass is a performative criticism wiki site created to explore the relationships between visual culture, contemporary criticism, mass communications, and computer technologies. Performative criticism is reflexive about positionality, boundaries, and authority, calling attention to author--text--audience relationships. Critical Mass will explore criticism as paradoxical power-critique, and will consider the ways in which new technologies of writing affect the development, distribution, and reception of criticism.
An open and fluid text-in/as-process, Critical Mass is shaped through the interactions of traditional classroom-based writing assignments with the iterative writing approaches of online discussion forums, featuring work from students in Art Educ 367.03; Criticizing Television and Art Educ 367.02; Criticizing Art at The Ohio State University.
Critical Mass is a site of investigation through experience and experimentation: We explore criticism and the politics of creating and reading critical statements within and around intra and extra-institutional spaces while considering relationships between criticism, language, subjectivity, and authority. We situate this project in constructivist learning processes, seeking ways to develop individual and communal reflexive critical practices that actively engage, yet problematize, assumptions about the meanings and functions of critical expressions.
